Christmas - that word evokes meanings galore.
Each person has one, two or three, maybe more
To show what the day or the season can be.
I need to reflect on its meaning to me.
To some it means singing of winter and cold,
To others it's carols, the new and the old,
To some it's the lights on their house and their tree,
Do such tones and brilliance mean Christmas to me?
To some it means Santa, his sleigh packed with toys
To go to the good little girls and boys.
To others it's time to make snowmen or ski.
Do these kinds of magic mean Christmas to me?
To some it's the artwork and beauty inlaid
In wrapping each gift carefully purchased or made,
Then set in its place at the foot of the tree.
Do such sparkling presents mean Christmas to me?
To some it's a replay of memories past.
To some, a vacation that goes by too fast.
To some getting cards from those we seldom see.
Do these kinds of feelings mean Christmas to me?
To some it's each festive and delicious treat
That all those attending so eagerly eat,
To some it's the fire blazing so cheerily.
Do such warmth and comfort mean Christmas to me?
To some it is giving and sharing with love
The bounty with which they've been blessed from above.
To some it is visiting friends and family.
Do such love and caring mean Christmas to me?
To some it's a time when the people on earth
Should think and reflect on our Savior's birth -
The gift of His Son that God gave you and me
Are these thoughts the essence of Christmas to me?
As I look at these meanings of Christmas I see
That lights, sounds, and magic, gifts under the tree,
The feelings of warmth, comfort, and charity
Begin with the birth of that special baby.
